Highlights from Pre-Convention Advocacy Update

Judy Karandjeff, VP for Advocacy, LWVMI Board of Directors, presented the Advocacy Update. She is stepping down from the LWVMI Board of Directors. Sandra Sorini-Elser is the newly elected VP for Advocacy.

NOTE: Sandy Sorini-Elser and former LWVMI President Christina Schlitt, discussed how a League can use state and national LWV positions to support or oppose local issues as a convention workshop choice.

Voting Rights

  • Citizens Protecting Voters’ Rights (aka Prove It Michigan). Ballot  language was approved by the Board of Canvassers
  • Americans for Citizens Voting. Ballot language approval pending.
  • The “Decline to Sign” campaign is almost ready for release.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detaining students while they are in the classroom.

  • Please submit any policy/procedure statements on this topic from local school boards.

Environment

  • Line 5. Attorney General Dana Nessel and 13 other state Attorneys General filed a lawsuit against Executive Order # 14156, declaring an “Energy Emergency.” There are vitally important aspects to this major environmental threat to our drinking water and energy use. Roll back of the Michigan Clean and Renewable Energy and Jobs Act (2023)

  • HB 4027, 4028. This will have local impact on our community. At present, DTE allows customers to purchase all or a percentage of their electricity that is generated from from wind turbines and solar panels.
  • HB 4007, 4283. Classifies fossil fuels used in the Upper Peninsula as clean energy.
